
A panel discussion on “Blue Growth: A Challenge for the Environment” was organized by the Program of Studies “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies” on Wednesday, 15 March 2023. The program is offered by the Higher School of Vocational Education and Training of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, MIEEK.
The event took place in the “Stavros Galatariotis” conference room at the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The number of attendees surpassed the organizers’ expectations. Among them were industry professionals, local authorities, students, and citizens.
The Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Nikos Nikolaides, and Mr. Bob D’ Haeseleer, Climate Neutral City Advisor for 100 Mission of the European Commission, addressed the event.
The panel comprised high-caliber professionals in the Maritime Sector. Captain Adami, Chair of CY-FOS (Cyprus Foundation of the Sea), pointed out the opportunities Blue Economy provides young people. Then, Dr. Angelos Menelaou, Head, Dept. Of Maritime Studies and Commerce, School of Business and Law, Frederick University, referred to the environmental challenges of coastal cities like Limassol. He also touched on the opportunities for the EU Mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities, one of which is Limassol.
Mr. Stavros Fokas Cavalierakis, Chair of ICS (The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers), Cyprus Branch, and lecturer in the Program of Studies “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies”, MIEEK, emphasized the importance of education in increasing awareness among young professionals on environmental issues. Mr. George Sotirelis, Chair of IMarEST Κύπρου (Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology), Cyprus Branch and Sales Manager at Cass Technava Ltd, focused on the impact of new technologies on procurement.
Finally, Ms. Georgia Demetriou, Secretary General of WISTA (Women’s International & Trading Association), Cyprus Branch referred to the career opportunities Blue Growth has provided women. Mr. Daniel Ellinas, Purchasing Officer in a shipping company and lecturer in the Program of Studies “Supply Chain Management and Maritime Studies”, MIEEK, was the moderator.
A lively discussion with the audience followed, and the evening ended with a reception.
