Welcome to a special feature on Cyprus Shipping News. While our daily focus remains on the maritime and shipping sectors, the broader economic resilience of our island is closely tied to the hospitality and tourism industry. To gain a deeper understanding of this vital sector, I recently had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Kratinos Socratous, the General manager of the iconic Capo Bay Hotel, which is owned and operated by Francoudi & Stephanou Ltd.
Kratinos has built a remarkable career at the helm of one of the most distinguished hotels in Cyprus. Known for his exceptional leadership and dedication to authentic Mediterranean hospitality, he brings a wealth of experience to the table. In this exclusive interview, we discuss his personal journey in the industry, the ongoing evolution of Capo Bay, and his strategic perspective on how regional geopolitical shifts and exciting new infrastructure projects are reshaping the local tourism landscape.
You have built a remarkable career in the hospitality industry. What initially drew you to this sector, and what keeps you passionate about it after all these years?
Hospitality appealed to me from the very beginning because it is ultimately a people business. It brings together cultures, personalities and experiences in a way that very few industries can. What has kept me passionate over the years is that no two days are ever the same. The industry is constantly evolving, shaped by changing guest expectations, technological innovation and global trends. Every challenge presents an opportunity to improve, to innovate and to inspire people. Seeing guests return year after year and knowing that Capo Bay has become part of their family traditions is perhaps the greatest reward. That sense of connection never loses its meaning.

Leading one of the most iconic hotels in Cyprus demands immense energy and dedication. How do you balance your demanding professional responsibilities with your personal life?
Hospitality is certainly demanding, particularly in a destination that welcomes visitors from around the world throughout much of the year. Balance is not about separating work and life completely; it is about being fully present wherever you are. I am fortunate to work with an exceptional management team, and I strongly believe in empowering people and building trust. Delegation allows leaders to focus on strategic direction while giving colleagues the opportunity to grow professionally. Outside work, I make a conscious effort to spend quality time with my family and friends, stay active and enjoy the natural beauty that Cyprus offers. Those moments allow me to recharge and return with renewed perspective and energy.
When you step away from the daily operations of Capo Bay, how do you prefer to spend your free time, and do you have a favourite spot on the island to relax and unwind?
Whenever time allows, I enjoy returning home to Limassol, where my family lives. Spending quality time with them helps me disconnect from the demands of hotel operations and reminds me of the importance of maintaining balance. I also enjoy exploring Cyprus beyond the coastline, particularly the island’s mountain villages and resorts. Whether it is a quiet weekend in the Troodos region, enjoying the fresh air, local gastronomy and beautiful scenery, or simply taking in the slower pace of mountain life, it is a wonderful way to recharge. Cyprus is fortunate to offer such diversity within a relatively small island.

Capo Bay has long been synonymous with excellence and exceptional service. What do you believe is the core philosophy that keeps your guests returning year after year?
What truly sets Capo Bay apart is the passion and dedication of our people. Many members of our team have been with us for years, building meaningful relationships with returning guests who often feel they are coming back to a second home. That sense of familiarity, combined with our commitment to continually enhancing our services, creates an experience that is both authentic and memorable. Guest expectations continue to evolve, and so do we. We remain focused on delivering experiences that exceed expectations while preserving the warm, personal hospitality that has defined Capo Bay for decades.
The ongoing geopolitical situation in the Middle East naturally creates waves across the Eastern Mediterranean. How is this current climate affecting Cyprus tourism in general, and what is the impact on your bookings and strategy?
Tourism has always been influenced by geopolitical developments, and the Eastern Mediterranean is no exception. While periods of uncertainty can affect traveller confidence and booking patterns, Cyprus has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt. Our island enjoys a strong reputation as a safe, stable and welcoming destination, which becomes particularly valuable during times of regional uncertainty. Naturally, booking behaviour has become more dynamic, with shorter lead times and increased demand for flexibility. At Capo Bay, we continuously monitor market developments and maintain a diversified approach across our source markets.

Despite these external regional challenges, how resilient do you feel the Cyprus tourism product is today, and what must the industry do to maintain its competitive edge?
I believe Cyprus has become significantly more resilient over the past decade. The tourism sector has learned valuable lessons from economic crises, the pandemic and geopolitical events, making the industry more agile and adaptable. However, maintaining competitiveness requires continuous investment. We must continue enhancing infrastructure, embracing sustainability, and investing in our people. Today’s traveller seeks authentic experiences, high-quality service and environmental responsibility alongside excellent accommodation.
The upcoming Paralimni Marina is a highly anticipated infrastructure project. What prospects do you see this new development bringing to the local economy and the broader tourism landscape of the island?
The development of the Paralimni Marina has the potential to become a transformational project for the area. Beyond creating new economic opportunities, it will further elevate Protaras as an international lifestyle destination. Marinas today are much more than berthing facilities. They become vibrant waterfront destinations featuring premium dining, retail, leisure experiences and cultural activities that benefit both visitors and local residents.
More specifically, how do you envision the new marina directly enhancing the holiday experience and options for guests staying at Capo Bay?
For us, the marina creates opportunities to develop new partnerships and bespoke experiences that combine accommodation with organised maritime activities, wellness, gastronomy and personalised excursions. Today’s travellers increasingly value memorable experiences, and the marina will undoubtedly expand those possibilities.
There is a strategic push to rebrand the wider Protaras area as the “Protaras Riviera”. How do you anticipate this elevated positioning will affect the demographic and the expectations of Capo Bay clients?
The “Protaras Riviera” concept, is an initiative taken by the local Municipality of Paralimni-Derynia, and specifically our Mayor George Nikolettos and his team, and is sponsored by the private sector, which also includes our company. It represents an exciting evolution rather than a complete transformation. The area already possesses exceptional natural assets, beautiful beaches and high-quality hospitality, and of course the first sunrise in Europe; the new positioning simply brings these strengths together under a more internationally recognisable identity. As the destination evolves, we expect to welcome an increasing number of discerning travellers seeking premium experiences, personalised service and authentic excellence rather than traditional mass tourism. For Capo Bay, this aligns perfectly with our long-term vision. Our guests already have high expectations, and we view this repositioning as an opportunity to further enhance our offering while preserving the genuine warmth and relaxed Cypriot hospitality that have always distinguished us.

Looking ahead, what exciting developments, upgrades or new services can we expect to see at Capo Bay as the hotel aligns with this new, upscale Riviera identity?
Looking ahead, our focus will continue to be on creating even more refined and immersive guest experiences. This includes further enhancements to our accommodation, wellness and culinary offerings, greater integration of digital guest services, and continued investment in sustainability initiatives that reflect the expectations of today’s responsible traveller. Most importantly, we will continue investing in our people. Exceptional hospitality begins with exceptional teams, and our colleagues remain our greatest asset.
