HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recently announced the signing of a technical memorandum of understanding with global turbine company GE Aerospace for the development of an optimized propulsion system for export warships at the Sea Air Space 2024 exhibition in the United States on April 11.

The agreement ceremony, held at the GE Aerospace booth on April 9 (local time), was attended by representatives from both companies, including Ho Ju-won, the representative of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Special Ship Business Division, and Rita Flaherty, vice president of GE Aerospace.

Through this agreement, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will design and construct warships of a world-class standard, while GE Aerospace will supply gas turbines for warship propulsion.

In particular, both companies plan to cooperate in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) business for export warships and strengthen technical cooperation for the development of the latest warships, including participation in the Royal Australian Navy frigate project, to expand foreign orders.

On the same day, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also signed a business agreement with global defense company L3Harris Technologies for the procurement of a Canadian submarine project.

As a result, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries intends to expand strategic cooperation for the procurement of the Canadian submarine project through mutual cooperation with L3Harris, including local procurement, technology transfer, and offset trade.

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries invited officials from nine governments worldwide to a delivery signing ceremony for the first timely delivery of a 3000-ton submarine, the Shin Chae-ho, showcasing the excellence of K-warships, including submarines, Aegis ships, and frigates. On March 28, the company was selected as the priority negotiation partner for the local construction and co-production of four warships, including frigates, from Peru, actively pursuing the expansion of its overseas market with a total of 18 warships ordered from abroad to date.
