Underscoring its expanding role as a premier international hub for cutting-edge maritime technology and sustainable shipping, the Republic of Cyprus hosted the dedicated Cyprus Maritime Innovation Event yesterday afternoon at SMM Hamburg 2026. Held in Hall B3.2OG at the Hamburg Messe and Congress, the gathering attracted an international audience of shipowners, technology providers, and industry executives eager to explore how Cyprus is helping steer shipping through its green and digital transition.

Organised jointly by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry and the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus, the afternoon served as both an institutional showcase and a practical forum on operational transformation.

Opening the session, Ms Andri Katomoniatou Iakovou, Trade and Industry Officer A’ at the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, and Mr George Stavrinou, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Germany, welcomed delegates and highlighted the enduring commercial and maritime ties between Cyprus and Germany. Both speakers emphasised the state’s strategic commitment to fostering an agile ecosystem where research, technology, and maritime commerce reinforce one another.

Providing the regulatory and strategic perspective, Ms Christina Patsiou, Acting Director and Senior Maritime Affairs Officer at the Shipping Deputy Ministry, outlined Cyprus’s proactive approach to maritime administration. She detailed ongoing initiatives supporting fleet decarbonisation, administrative digitalisation, and the creation of targeted incentives to attract forward-looking shipping and maritime technology enterprises to the island.

The focus then turned to home-grown expertise during the Cyprus Maritime Innovation Showcase, spotlighting how Cypriot firms are deploying advanced technologies to solve practical operational challenges:

 Mr Zacharias Siokouros, CEO of the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI), outlined collaborative research initiatives bridging academic R&D with commercial fleet operations.

 Mr Christos Georgiou, Chief Product & AI Officer at Prevention at Sea Ltd, detailed the practical integration of artificial intelligence and digital applications to enhance onboard safety and risk management.

 Mr Stelios Christofi, Deputy Sales Manager at Onetech Services Ltd, highlighted marine engineering and technical solutions optimising vessel performance.

 Mrs Elsa Markoulidou, Systems Integration Manager at Supernova Consulting Ltd, focused on enterprise systems integration and the role of unified digital infrastructure in modern fleet management.

The afternoon culminated in a dynamic panel discussion titled “Navigating the Maritime Transition: Innovation, Sustainability and Competitiveness in a Changing World”, moderated by Mr Zacharias Siokouros.

Bringing together leaders across various sectors of the Cyprus maritime cluster, including Mr Petros Achtypis (CEO, Prevention at Sea Ltd), Mr George Poullaides (Founder, Intellar Innovative Solutions Ltd), Mr Yiannos Lakkotrypes (Business Development Executive, Multimarine Services Ltd), Mr Vlassis Papapanagis (Chief Commercial Officer, Tototheo Global Ltd), and Mr Marinos Ioannou (Environmental Manager, Dromon Bureau of Shipping Ltd), the debate tackled the practical realities of a sector navigating stricter decarbonisation rules, volatile market dynamics, and technological disruption.

Panellists shared candid perspectives on how shipping and maritime service providers can elevate environmental compliance without sacrificing operational reliability or cost efficiency. The discussion reinforced that cross-sector collaboration, digital agility, and investment in skilled people remain essential if the industry is to remain competitive amid accelerating global regulatory demands.

The event reaffirmed Cyprus’s standing not only as a leading flag state and ship management power, but as an increasingly influential testbed and provider of maritime innovation on the world stage.
