 Valenciaport is part of a project that analyses climate change scenarios and their effects on the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia to adapt their infrastructures and operability to the variations that may occur in the medium and long term. The experts who have worked on ECCLIPSE  will present the results on 26th April at the facilities of Puertos del Estado in Madrid. An event that has the collaboration of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), the Valenciaport Foundation and the state agency under the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.

During this conference, the results of this European project, which has analysed the impact of climate change on ports and its effects on the maritime environment, will be presented. The programme will be attended by the President of Puertos del Estado, Álvaro Rodríguez; the Director of the General Secretariat of the Interreg SUDOE programme, Isabelle Roger; the Director General of the APV, Francesc Sánchez; and the Director General of the Valenciaport Foundation, Antonio Torregrosa.

The PAV and the Valenciaport Foundation have been working with Puertos del Estado and the Foundation for Climate Research to draw up a strategy for the adaptation of the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia to the effects of climate change. Specifically, among the activities of the ECCLIPSE project, a common methodology has been defined for analysing the impacts of climate change and its effects on the maritime port environment, developing early prediction models of the results of climate variations at a local level. In addition, and in collaboration with the port community, its possible impacts on port operations and infrastructures have been examined. This has provided a complete map of the vulnerabilities of the ports, which will be monitored in the framework of the climate change observatory created for this purpose. On the basis of this information, adaptation measures will be designed for the port enclosures which will have to be included within a broader framework to ensure that at least 80% of the logistics chain remains operational in the event of any extreme climatic phenomenon.

During the conference, which will be held in hybrid format (online and face-to-face), the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change 2021-2030 and its work programme will be presented; the assessment of climate change in the ports of South West Europe, its replicability and lessons learnt; the climate change adaptation strategy of the Spanish port system; and the climate risks of the ports of Sagunto, Valencia and Gandia (Spain), the port of Bordeaux (France), and the port of Aveiro (Portugal), as well as their atmospheric and oceanic climate projections.

ECCLIPSE is an initiative co-funded by the European Commission through the Interreg Sudoe Programme. The project consortium is formed by the Valenciaport Foundation (coordinator), four technological partners: Puertos del Estado, Hidromod, Cerema and the Foundation for Climate Research and three ports: Valencia, Aveiro and Bordeau
