Advisory body appointment consolidates Hill Dickinson’s arbitration expertise

Edward Liu, Partner, Hill Dickinson.

Hill Dickinson has consolidated its position at the centre of international arbitration and  dispute resolution in the Far East with the appointment of Edward Liu to the Hong Kong Department of Justice’s Advisory Body on Third Party Funding of Arbitration and Mediation.

This makes Edward, a Hill Dickinson Partner, the only person, and the youngest, to sit concurrently on all DOJ’s committees concerning dispute resolution, including the Advisory Committee on Promotion of Arbitration, the Steering Committee on Mediation, and this newly appointed advisory body.

Secretary for Justice, Teresa Cheng SC, said she was inviting Edward Liu to join the advisory body in light of his “expertise, experience and involvement in the legal and arbitration sector”.

Accepting this latest appointment, Edward said: “ I am very delighted to have been appointed to this critical advisory body, which is set up as per section 98X(1) of Part 10A of the Arbitration Ordinance, to monitor and review the operation of the third party funding of arbitration and mediation, including the implementation of the relevant code of practice. As the only person who serves on three committees overseeing arbitration and mediation, I am very grateful to the Secretary of Justice and other colleagues of the Department of Justice for their trust and high recognition of my expertise in these aspects, and I see these appointments as a responsibility and an expectation. I am very much looking forward to working with other industry leaders to promote and strengthen Hong Kong’s enviable status as an international hub for legal and dispute resolution services.”

Damien Laracy, Hill Dickinson’s Head of Hong Kong, commented: “International arbitration and mediation are an increasingly important aspect of commercial and maritime law. We welcome Edward’s appointment which demonstrates recognition of his extensive experience in this area as well as the commitment Hill Dickinson has made to its wide portfolio of commercial and maritime law expertise.”
