Customisation for Reduced Risk


OneOcean 2021 now automates even more of the calculations that mariners are required to do in the voyage planning process. All features of the latest release were designed with an eye on simplifying processes, saving users’ time and increasing accuracy. It quickly became apparent in the development process that allowing for more customisation in the solution would yield a better performance for our customers with more accurate outputs.

To make the most of OneOcean’s capabilities, users enter information about their vessel in the ‘Vessel Settings’ and ‘Route Settings’. This includes detailed parameters, equipment, voyage instructions and safety thresholds. They can also create ‘Weather Limits Profiles’, which define safety specifications for criteria such as wind speed, wave height and minimum distance from storms. Using this information, OneOcean can ensure that when routes are created, calculations and risk assessments are as accurate as possible.

Users enter details about their vessel in Vessel Settings to ensure that OneOcean provides estimates, warnings and other outputs that are as accurate as possible.

Once a route has been finalised, notifications for safety measures can be set to appear in real time along the journey. These are seamlessly documented in both the digital passage plan and approval process. This functionality allows all adjustments to an intended voyage, both major and minor, to be seen almost instantly by the teams in the office ashore through integration with FleetManager, OneOcean’s web portal for shoreside users.

For many ship managers, it is important to ensure that their vessels are surpassing minimum compliance standards as they travel through waters around the world. It is difficult to ensure that both external and company standards are adhered to without a mechanism in place that supports communication and enables enforcement. By entering ship data and company-mandated safety and compliance standards, OneOcean can flag and notify users of actions that put vessels at risk of violating regulations and policies.

OneOcean initially targeted three key areas where regulations to be clearly viewed in one format. These are navigational safety, environmental compliance and weather risk. For example, company-wide UKC calculation thresholds can be pre-defined at the fleet level, published to vessels and then set to be the default setting for each ship. Or, depending on the user’s preference, captains can set parameters for their own vessels, which can still be monitored from shore. The result of these personalised standards is stringent navigational risk mitigation.

As many companies use a combination of digital and paper-based documentation, referencing these sources at the same time can be cumbersome. Information is often formatted differently making it harder to compare and comprehend how one relates to another. OneOcean standardises the format of information, making it easier to ensure everyone is on the same page. For example, one waypoints table configuration can be set for an entire fleet, ensuring consistency in what data is required and how it is displayed to users both ashore and aboard the vessel. This reduces the time needed to train crews who work on many vessels, who now don’t need to familiarize themselves with several different processes.
