Greece’s shipping magnate Ioannis Angelicoussis died in Athens on Saturday after suffering a heart attack three weeks ago

Ioannis Angelicoussis suffered a heart attack on March 20 at home and was admitted to hospital where he was sedated. After 20 days in the hospital, the well-known Greek ship owner has died at aged 73.

Angelicoussis was born in 1948 in London and was the son of Antonis Angelicoussis and Maria Papaliou. He started to be involved in his father’s company in 1973. Ioannis Angelicoussis took over as chief executive of Angelicoussis Shipping Group in 1989 after the death of his father. The Angelicoussis Group is the second largest international shipping group. The group has currently 141 vessels in operation most of them sail under the Greek flag and also have a further 15 on order, according to its website.

For the last eight years, daughter, Maria Angelicoussis, has been taking on more responsibilities and will now succeed her father as CEO of the company.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis Greek Prime Minister praised Angelicoussis for his contributions to the Greek shipping industry as well as for the recent donations in the country’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Giannis Plakiotakis Greece’s Minister of Shipping commented: “Ioannis Aggelicoussis has been an emblematic figure in global shipping, with work and action that have brought him to the top of the world for decades. We will always remember him with deep respect and appreciation for what he offered to shipping and Greece.”

Vassilios Demetriades, Cyprus Shipping Deputy Minister stated in his Twitter account: “My sincere condolences to the family of Ioannis Angelicoussis. An irreplaceable loss for global shipping!”

Angelicoussis’s funeral is scheduled for today. Instead of flowers or wreathes the request from the family is to make donations to the Nikaia hospital, an institution in Piraeus the Angelicoussis family supported for many years.
