United Cyprus Republican Party slams Christodoulides’ boat ban: “A law enforcement trap that will kill Cyprus’ yachting industry”

October 29, 2026
The United Cyprus Republican Party (UCRP) strongly opposes the Christodoulides Cabinet’s newly drafted legislation aimed at banning small boats from leaving harbours during adverse weather conditions (https://en.philenews.com/local/draft-rules-sailing-ban-bad-weather-small-boats). The party warns that the bill criminalises ordinary mariners, mimics authoritarian overregulation, and threatens to dismantle the island’s growing yachting and maritime tourism sector.
Instead of modernising Cyprus’ maritime safety infrastructure by decentralising search and rescue (SAR) operations and establishing a dedicated, community-driven voluntary rescue service—similar to highly successful models in Iceland (ICE-SAR), Norway (Redningsselskapet), and the United Kingdom (RNLI)—the government has opted for a punitive, heavy-handed approach.
The proposed bill imposes severe penalties and criminal liability on yacht owners and captains who may simply misjudge or miss a rapidly changing weather forecast.
“This bill is a law enforcement trap, not a safety measure,” said a spokesperson for the United Cyprus Republican Party. “True maritime safety is built on education, community empowerment, and robust volunteer rescue networks, not on treating hobbyists and yacht owners like criminals. If passed, this short-sighted legislation will drive international vessel registries, boaters, and vital tourism revenue away from Cyprus, effectively killing our domestic yachting industry.”
The UCRP calls on the Christodoulides Cabinet to immediately withdraw the draft legislation and instead launch a multi-stakeholder consultation aimed at establishing a National Voluntary Search and Rescue Service that supports, rather than penalises, the seafaring community.
