HELMEPA continues to protect seas and coasts for yet another year, but with caution!

The Covid-19 pandemic may have not allowed the coastal cleanup campaign, coordinated by HELMEPA every May throughout Greece, to go ahead, but we are pleased to notice that our Member and cooperating entities are organizing coastal cleanup actions throughout Greece.
In support of these efforts, we continue to encourage voluntary coastal cleanup initiatives this summer, as long as all necessary measures are strictly implemented, such as participation in small groups, safe distancing of 1-2 meters among participants, use of gloves and mask and the use of antiseptic hand wash after the activity.
In this spirit, we are moving on with the preparations for this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Campaign, coordinated by HELMEPA for the 30th (!) consecutive year in our country between September 20th and October 31st, 2020, always depending on the conditions and the development of the pandemic until then.
Those interested, may find on HELMEPA’s website relevant guidelines and the litter recording Data Card in order to contribute to HELMEPA’s ongoing research on marine litter. Moreover, those who more familiar with new technologies, may use the “Clean Swell” app of the US-based NGO Ocean Conservancy, in collaboration with HELMEPA, for online litter recording.
We are looking forward to receiving information and photos from your cleanups, which will be projected, if you wish, on HELMEPA’s social media in order to encourage more volunteers to take action!
