Using methane from biogas for the energy transition

What is the role of methane gas and its conversion into hydrogen in the decarbonisation of the energy supply? NEUMAN & ESSER GROUP (NEA) provides answers for the conversion process of methane gas to CO2-free energy solutions. Building on the success of 2020, NEA is organising “Compressor Day 2021” in two virtual symposia, the first of which will take place on 27 May.

Methane from biogas was initially considered a simple product of waste management. Today, it is considered a renewable energy source that has undergone a tremendous revaluation. Germany covers about a quarter of its renewable energy with electricity from biogas plants, making it the largest user in Europe.

Biomethane is a 100% renewable gas obtained from waste from the food industry, kitchens, agriculture, households or sewage treatment plant sludge. It can be injected into the natural gas grid, making it possible to supply consumers who heat, cook or generate electricity, even if they are located far from the injection point. The production of green hydrogen from biogas also plays an important role in the transition to CO2-free energy systems. Where gas grids are not available, liquefaction offers the possibility of transporting the energy in a different way.

According to various scenarios of the European Commission on the long-term strategic energy vision until 2050, the demand for gas in Europe will decrease. But regardless of the overall development of gas demand, the role of renewable, CO2-free gases will increase in all scenarios over the next few decades. How biogas utilisation contributes to the energy solution will be explained by experts from TGE Gas Engineering, ARCANUM Energy Systems and NEA at Compressor Day.

Compressor Day 2021 will continue on 25 November with more topics on CO2-free energy solutions: Hydrogen refuelling stations, dry-running reciprocating compressor technology, hydrogen value chain and power-to-liquid.
