Carbon Neutral LLC has announced a strategic collaboration with South Korea’s EcoCreation LTD to address the pressing issue of hard-to-recycle plastic waste generated by cruise ships in the Caribbean. This initiative aims to establish port-based infrastructure that utilizes advanced plastic-to-oil pyrolysis technology, converting waste into usable products while adhering to international maritime regulations. The partnership is set to launch in Puerto Rico, a key hub for cruise operations in the region.

Innovative Waste Management Solutions for the Caribbean

Cruise ships, often described as floating cities, produce significant amounts of solid waste, particularly plastics that are difficult to recycle. These materials, including mixed and contaminated packaging, pose challenges due to limited recycling options and strict regulations against ocean discharge. The collaboration between Carbon Neutral and EcoCreation seeks to mitigate these issues by implementing advanced recycling technologies that convert eligible plastic waste into valuable outputs.

The Caribbean is recognized as the world’s busiest cruise market, with high vessel density and frequent port calls leading to substantial waste management demands. This makes the region an ideal candidate for advanced recycling infrastructure tailored to maritime operations. Puerto Rico has been selected as the initial site for this initiative due to its established port facilities and its status as a major cruise destination for leading operators such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line.

The project aligns with international regulations, including the International Maritime Organization’s MARPOL Annex V, which prohibits the discharge of plastics at sea. By focusing on port-based processing, the initiative aims to enhance compliance while improving the end-of-life outcomes for plastics managed at ports. Over the next decade, Carbon Neutral plans to deploy up to 120 pyrolysis processing facilities across strategic Caribbean ports, with the potential to process 300,000 metric tons of plastic waste annually. This could yield approximately 150,000 metric tons of pyrolysis oil each year, contributing to a more sustainable maritime fuel supply chain.

Long-Term Goals and Environmental Impact

The pyrolysis oil produced from this process is intended to serve as a substitute or blendstock for marine fuels, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Walter Hong, CEO of Carbon Neutral LLC, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership reflects a practical, infrastructure-driven response to one of the maritime industry’s most persistent waste challenges.” The focus on durable, port-based solutions aims to support compliance and improve waste diversion outcomes for cruise operators and port communities throughout the Caribbean.

EcoCreation has a proven track record with its commercial plastic-to-oil facilities, demonstrating stable operations under real-world conditions. The collaboration with Carbon Neutral LLC represents a significant step toward addressing the environmental challenges posed by cruise ship waste, paving the way for a more sustainable future in maritime operations.
