The first services using electric heavy-duty vehicles for ship supplies operations started in the ports of Genoa and Savona, as part of a gradual process to reduce emissions.

LC3 Trasporti, an Umbrian company and a national and European leader in sustainable transport, and Costa Cruises have initiated a pilot project in the ports of Genoa and Savona, involving the use of electric trucks for ship supply operations.

The test, conducted in October 2025, utilized heavy electric vehicles (BEVs) with a capacity exceeding 40 tons. This initiative represents a natural evolution of an already established path, which in previous years saw the introduction of BIO-LNG-powered vehicles to reduce emissions in logistics activities. The introduction of BEVs now enables zero emissions for fully electrifiable routes.

The results achieved have led to the decision to continue the collaboration into 2026, with plans to increase the use of electric vehicles. The goal is to gradually integrate zero-emission solutions with those already in use, such as BIO-LNG-powered vehicles, which are employed on medium- and long-distance routes in Italy and Europe, to maximize the reduction of environmental impact across various operational areas.

The collaboration between LC3 Trasporti and Costa Cruises, which began in 2022, has already resulted in a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to 2018 levels, thanks to the coverage of various national and international routes with low-impact vehicles. The introduction of electric trucks is therefore an additional step in a broader and more structured plan aimed at making maritime logistics increasingly sustainable and aligned with European decarbonization goals.

Thanks to the initiatives developed in recent years, LC3 Trasporti has helped Costa Cruises’ logistics services achieve sustainability standards already in line with future European emission targets. “We are proud to have been chosen by Costa Cruises, an Italian company and part of Carnival Corporation, as a partner in this ambitious project. This initiative is part of a long-term strategy aimed at integrating low-emission technologies into port supply services, reaffirming the commitment of both companies to decarbonization.
