Oyster racing returns for the annual Oyster Palma Regatta

Last week, an international fleet of 20 Oyster Yachts returned to Port Adriano, Palma de Mallorca. A week of comradeship, competition and Corinthian spirit, the fleet enjoyed four days sailing in a varied range of conditions, making the most of Mallorca’s south-western coastline and winds.

With the fleet ranging from 50-90ft, we raced in three classes to ensure a fair and equal regatta for all involved. Whether a seasoned racer or a complete novice, the Oyster Palma Regatta gave the Oyster Family a unique opportunity to get out on the water alongside their friends, families and crews and learn more about racing in a safe and sociable environment.

Supported by our event partners, B&G, Pantaenius, Cathelco and Dolphin Sails, the week encapsulated more than just racing. Beginning with expert Bluewater Masterclasses, each seminar allowed owners and crew to learn more about their equipment from our brand partners and experts. As day turned into night, the Oyster Team hosted a week of legendary social events to match the fun had on the water.

B&G Race Day 1 – Thursday 2^nd October

With light winds forecast, the race committee pushed back the race start in hope of thermal breeze to carry the race. As the winds built, the fleet enjoyed a windward, leeward course which saw kites being hoisted and dropped at precisely timed moments to maximise the light conditions. Wins were taken by Oyster 885 Babiana in Class 1, Oyster 625 Peregrine Falcon in Class 2 and Oyster 56 Olanta in Class 3.

Pantaenius Race Day 2 – Friday 3^rd October

In the first race in the Oyster Cup pursuit series, the winds were kinder to the fleet as they set off in timed increments based on their handicaps. As 56 Olanta remained ahead for the first 90 minutes, the larger, quicker boats in the fleet were soon on her tail. 655 Blow maintained a sizeable lead until the final minutes of the race as 625 Peregrine Falcon were tight on their tail, and for the first time in Oyster Regatta history we had a tied first place, making it all to play for between the two front runners.

Cathelco Race Day 3 – Saturday 4^th October

A fancy dress day to remember as newly handed over Oyster 675 Grey Goose came out fighting in their Baywatch costumes, catching the eye of the judges and earning their rights to the best fancy dress boat of the day. With two races squeezed into the afternoon, it was Oyster 885 Babiana who hoisted their spinnaker and sailed to victory in both races for Class 1. In Class 2, 655 Blow took victory in Race 3, while Oyster World Rally 2022-23 circumnavigator 625 Black Lion took the ascendancy in Race 4. In Class 3, Oyster 595 Carina took her first victory of the week in Race 3 and Oyster 56 Olanta took the honours in Race 4.

Dolphin Sails Race Day 4 – Sunday 5^th October

After the lighter winds all week, the second Oyster Cup pursuit race saw a complete weather change – with 2m swells and 30+knots of breeze recorded out in the Bay of Palma, the fleet changed into their foul weather gear to put their boats through their paces in a two-hour race. It was a thrill to see these stunning boats heeled over and taking the breeze and swell in their stride. With 655 Blow and 625 Peregrine Falcon competing for first place, it was the 625 who took the line honours, with a stunning reach leg that saw them extend their lead from the pack.

The final evening saw a stunning Gala Dinner at Cases de sa Font Seca, where the fleet and all their guests celebrated the week with good food, good music and good company. The Overall winners were:

Class 1 – Oyster 885 Babiana

Class 2 – Oyster 625 Peregrine Falcon

Class 3 – Oyster 56 Olanta
