Investment in electronic logbook furthers fleet-wide digitalization and will help ferry operator streamline data gathering and reporting, contributing to better safety, environmental and efficiency performance.

 Color Line, Norway’s largest and one of Europe’s leading cruise and transport companies, has signed an agreement with NAPA, the global provider of maritime software, to deploy NAPA Logbook across its entire fleet of five vessels throughout 2025. The implementation of the electronic logbook solution helps meet growing safety, compliance, and efficiency requirements for ferry operators, while reducing onboard workload for crew. The vessels will operate along domestic Norwegian routes and international services between Oslo and Kiel.  

This strategic move away from manual data entries builds on a longstanding relationship between the two companies, and supports Color Line’s digitalization goals by automating compliance, ensuring traceability and improving collaboration between ship and shoreside teams.  

By adopting NAPA Logbook, Color Line will simplify environmental and safety reporting, streamline regulatory compliance, and ease crew workload. Seafarers will be able to save time, avoid duplicate data entry and reduce the risk of errors, while shoreside teams gain seamless access to 24/7 real-time data via NAPA Fleet Intelligence, enabling faster, more informed decision-making. 

The rapid rollout of NAPA Logbook has been fully remote, without the need for onboard hardware installation, making it easier to update in line with crew needs and to scale across the fleet.

The partnership reflects a growing push for higher quality data across the maritime industry. The outcomes of the International Maritime Organization’s latest MEPC 83 meetings called for tightening requirements around data collection and reporting, from granular fuel oil consumption data to methane emissions and ballast water documentation.  

These data requirements sit against the backdrop of the 2024 International Seafarers Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) survey which reported that 54% of seafarers have seen their workloads increase, 44% are experiencing greater stress and 33% worry about the risk of criminalization due to complex reporting requirements. Digital, integrated tools like NAPA Logbook, NAPA Permit to Work supported by NAPA Fleet Intelligence, can allay many of these concerns and allow seafarers to focus on their core responsibilities of maintaining operational safety and efficiency.
