Limassol – Piraeus Ferry Link 3rd year of operation – An interview with Christos Manoli of Scandro Holdings
What are the main challenges you face in operating the ferry service between Limassol and Piraeus?
To ensure the smooth operation of this service, we must maintain the timetable to prevent delays and ensure that the vessel operates in accordance with the terms and conditions of our agreement with the government. In this regard, the technical department and I are responsible for overseeing the daily monitoring of the vessel. Additionally, as with any hospitality business, catering to passengers’ special needs can be challenging. However, we are committed to assisting our passengers and providing solutions to any issues that may arise, ensuring their comfort throughout the journey.
How do you ensure the safety and comfort of passengers onboard the Daleela?
The Daleela adheres to all safety regulations set by the IMO, the Cyprus government, the EU, and other international bodies. Before the start of each season, the vessel undergoes all necessary inspections by RINA, the flag state, port state control, the Cyprus health authorities, and the Cyprus deputy ministry of tourism. At the start of each voyage, a safety video is played on all TVs, outlining emergency procedures. The vessel is also equipped with CCTV cameras monitored by our crew. In terms of passenger comfort, the Daleela offers a cafeteria, restaurant, casino, kids’ area, and a 24-hour reception lobby. There is also an outdoor seating area at the stern where passengers can enjoy the sunrise or sunset.
Can you discuss the impact of the ferry service to the Cypriot/Greek Tourism
The ferry service between Cyprus and Greece significantly boosts tourism for both countries. It offers an additional transportation option, making it easier for tourists to travel between the two destinations, potentially increasing visitor numbers. It is a more cost-effective alternative to air travel, appealing to budget-conscious travelers. The service also allows Cypriot residents to take their cars, motorbikes, or caravans to explore Europe, while Greek nationals and other travelers can bring their vehicles to Cyprus for their holidays.
What measures are in place to accommodate passengers with special needs or requirements?
Passengers are encouraged to visit our reception for any inquiries or requests, where our staff is always ready to assist. The vessel has an elevator for easy access to all decks and provides specially equipped cabins for passengers with disabilities. Additionally, there is a 24-hour doctor on board, wheelchairs available for those who need them, and kennels for passengers traveling with dogs.
How does the ferry service contribute to the local economy and tourism between Cyprus and Greece?
This service opens up new opportunities for the development of commercial relations between the two countries and the broader economy, significantly benefiting the growth of Cyprus’s shipping and tourism infrastructure. It reduces Cyprus’s isolation from mainland Europe and offers the potential for further improvements in maritime transport for Cyprus, the rest of Europe, and the surrounding region.
How do you handle challenges, such as “difficult” passengers?
At Scandro Holding, we do not view passengers as “difficult.” Instead, we are dedicated to assisting and finding solutions to any issues or requests that may arise, ensuring a pleasant experience for all passengers.
