RMC launches TT-Line’s second LNG dual-fuel vessel

Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) has launched the second and final LNG dual-fuel RoPax (roll-on/roll-off passenger) vessel for Tasmanian transport company TT-Line Company.

The RoPax vessel, Spirit of Tasmania V, can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It will operate between Geelong and Devonport on Australia’s Bass Strait.

The first vessel in the series, Spirit of Tasmania IV, was launched in October last year and will be delivered in August this year. The second vessel is scheduled for delivery in the spring of next year.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 557 vessels, with another 160 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
