HD Hyundai unveiled its vision for the future of shipbuilding at Posidonia 2024, the world’s largest shipbuilding and marine exhibition, held in Athens, Greece, from May 3 to May 7. The event, which saw participation from over 2,000 companies across 77 countries, provided a global stage for HD Hyundai to showcase its latest eco-friendly and technologically advanced ship models.

HD Hyundai’s presence at the exhibition was marked by a significant collaboration with the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR). On the first day, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with these organizations to develop new ship structures that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) technology to eliminate blind spots. This innovative approach aims to enhance loading efficiency and reduce resistance, marking a significant step forward in maritime safety and operational efficiency.

The company’s booth in the Korea Pavilion, organized by the Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Plant Association, featured a range of eco-friendly ship models, including methanol-powered Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), container ships, and futuristic LNG carriers. Additionally, HD Hyundai’s group pavilion displayed dual-fuel Himsen engines and retrofitted LNG ship models, highlighting the company’s commitment to low-carbon fuel technologies.

On May 4, HD Hyundai received basic certification (Approval in Principle, AIP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for an ammonia-powered ship developed in collaboration with the American company Amogy. This ship features an ammonia fuel cell-based zero-carbon electric propulsion system and power generation engine replacement technology, underscoring HD Hyundai’s leadership in zero-emission maritime solutions.

Further certifications followed on May 5 and May 6. In collaboration with Swiss company WinGD, HD Hyundai received AIP from ABS and the Norwegian classification society DNV for an ammonia fuel engine and fuel supply system. The company also received certification for petrochemical product carriers and container ships equipped with its independently developed AI safety package.

Throughout the exhibition, HD Hyundai’s top executives, including Vice Chairman Jung Ki-sun, engaged in discussions with global shipping companies and classification societies about the future of the shipbuilding industry and potential technological collaborations. Jung emphasized the company’s forward-looking strategy, stating, “We will lead the great transformation of the sea by proactively responding to technological changes through the development of futuristic ships that combine eco-friendly and digital technologies.”
