Hanwha Aerospace announced  that it has received Approval In Principle  certification for its Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cells from the Korean Register of Shipping, a member of the International Association of Classification Societies since 1988. Korean Register  is one and only internationally recognized classification society headquartered in the Republic of Korea. This certification validates the application stability of Hanwha’s cutting-edge technology and its compliance with international regulations.

The AIP certification ceremony was held at the Pangyo R&D Center on the 30th, attended by Seung-Hak Moon, the Head of Electric Propulsion System Business at Hanwha Aerospace, and Dae-Heon Kim, the Head of Research at the Korean Register of Shipping, among others.

“The AIP certification confirms the integrity of our Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cells and demonstrates our unwavering commitment and ability to lead the decarbonization of the maritime industry. Our ongoing commitment to research and development is strategically designed to accelerate the growth of carbon-free fuel markets, with a focus on hydrogen.” said Seung-Hak Moon, the Head of Electric Propulsion System Business at Hanwha Aerospace.

Securing the AIP certification for its hydrogen fuel cells, Hanwha Aerospace has not only proven the stability of its technology but also set the stage for future formal certification of its polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) based hydrogen fuel cells for ships.

The company is also set to collaborate with Amogy to supply an ammonia power generation system to the ammonia-propelled ship being developed by Hanwha Ocean.
