APM Terminals and the Port of Kalundborg, Denmark have won the 2024 sustainability award arranged by Danish trade organisation Danish Ports. The award was won based on the combined sustainability efforts initiated by APM Terminals and the Port of Kalundborg.

Initiatives implemented by APM Terminals include the switch to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil  in 2023 and the electrification of cranes as well as container handling equipment.

All in all, initiatives which will ensure that APM Terminals in Kalundborg becomes the first terminal in the world connecting both green landside and marine side operations – following the introduction of the Laura Maersk vessel schedule earlier in 2023.

“Our many different sustainability initiatives truly mark that APM Terminals Kalundborg – the Green Zealand Gateway – is the ‘good call’ when it comes to lifting the standard of responsibility for our customers’ container handling and transportation to and from any destination on Zealand. We are immensely proud to be recognised by this Danish Ports sustainability award, for the various efforts and initiatives we have implemented to achieve our net-zero ambitions,” announces Managing Director APM Terminals Nordics, Mikael Gutman.

At a global level, APM Terminals has made an industry-leading commitment to be fully net zero by 2040, and to reduce its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to 2022. Scope 1 are emissions produced while carrying out business activities, whereas scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased energy.

The jury emphasized that it was APM Terminals and Port of Kalundborg’s holistic approach to the sustainability agenda that tipped the scale in the competition. The holistic approach includes both own technical sustainability projects as well as making the responsible choice the easy choice for customers.
