Vireon , a fully owned subsidiary of Norwegian Hydrogen and the leading hydrogen refueling company in the Nordics, has secured a pivotal EU grant of €9.2 million to spearhead the construction of green hydrogen production and refueling stations for heavy-duty vehicles across Finland and Denmark. This marks a groundbreaking step in Vireon’s mission to drive the transition to a decarbonized transportation network throughout Europe.
This is the second EU grant for Norwegian Hydrogen in a short time. Earlier this year, Norwegian Hydrogen was awarded a €9 million grant from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership for the development of an integrated green hydrogen value chain at the Port of Hirtshals in Denmark.

The ambitious project aims to build and deploy a 5 MW electrolyzer and a network of green hydrogen refueling stations stretching from Northern Finland via Sweden and Denmark to continental Europe, establishing a vital corridor for zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles.
The grant will enable the construction of a total of seven refueling stations in Finland and Denmark, ensuring widespread accessibility for both passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles. In Finland, four strategically located stations will be built in Tornio, Liminka, Jyväskylä, and the greater Helsinki area. Additionally, three refueling stations will be established in Denmark, located in northern Jutland, Vejle, and Padborg, as integral components of this transnational project.
“This is a huge milestone for Vireon. Several OEMs have confirmed that they will deliver hydrogen trucks from 2025 onwards, and Vireon is both willing and able to build the refueling stations needed to get those trucks on the Nordic roads. I hope this news will make all Nordic transportation companies interested in hydrogen mobility reach out,” says Per Øyvind Voie, Managing Director of Vireon.
The funding is a testament to the confidence in Norwegian Hydrogen and Vireons’ commitment to advancing green hydrogen infrastructure and technology. The project aims not only to reduce carbon emissions but also to serve as a catalyst for the adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles across the region.
Supported by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), an instrumental EU funding mechanism, this project aligns with the European Green Deal’s goals. The CEF is dedicated to enhancing sustainable and interconnected trans-European networks in transport, energy, and digital services. By addressing critical infrastructure needs, CEF investments are key to Europe’s decarbonization efforts, aiming for a sustainable future by 2030 and 2050.
