Hailing from South Africa, Kostas’ journey in the maritime sector began in 2001 when he relocated to Cyprus. Since joining UMAR Shipping Services in 2009, he has consistently demonstrated leadership and a keen understanding of the dynamic challenges in the industry.

In 2015, Kostas took a significant step forward in his professional development by enrolling in the CIIM MBA program, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and staying at the forefront of industry trends. Graduating in 2017, he now leverages this advanced education to bring innovative solutions and strategic insights to the forefront of UMAR Shipping Services Ltd.

UMAR SHIPPING SERVICES is one of the world’s leading shipping representatives, representing some of the largest organizations in the maritime industry and serves customers all around the world from various strategic locations.

With a number of leading manufacturers among your portfolio, how does the UW Group, and specifically UMAR, maintain robust relationships and provide effective representation for each brand?

At UMAR, we understand the critical importance of nurturing strong partnerships with our esteemed manufacturers. Our dedicated account management team ensures personalized attention and understanding of the unique needs of each brand, and we know that regular and open communication is key – this is why we maintain transparent and consistent communication channels with our principals this includes regular updates on market trends, sales performance, and any relevant industry insights.

We collaborate with each manufacturer to develop strategic business plans aligned with their goals and market trends and this ensures that our representation is in line with the broader objectives of the brands with which we partner. Our team conducts thorough market research and analysis to stay informed about industry trends, consumer preferences, and competitive landscapes. This information is shared with our principals to facilitate accurate decision-making.

Clear performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) are established in collaboration with each principal, regular assessments are conducted, and feedback is shared to track progress and identify areas for improvement.

We invest in continuous training for our sales teams to ensure in-depth product knowledge for each brand which enables effective representation, enhances customer interactions, and boosts overall brand perception.

How did you get involved with the Sea and Shipping? 

I’ve always felt a pull towards the sea’s immense power and the endless adventures it offers. The idea of playing a part in global trade excited me. Starting out in sales, and diving into the world of international shipping and trade. The challenges, evolution and non-stop action of the maritime sector keep me hooked. Being part of this global system is simply fulfilling. 

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a professional football player! The thrill of the game, the camaraderie with the team, the excitement, effort, and the rush of scoring goals ignites a fire like no other. While my path eventually led me towards the maritime industry and the practice of sales, the passion and determination I developed on the field have stayed with me, driving me to tackle challenges head-on, gracefully accept any rare setbacks, and continue to strive for excellence in everything I do.

What do you look forward for Cyprus Shipping in 2024?

The potential for growth and new opportunities, especially for young aspirants who are eager to make their mark, is truly inspiring – given the rise of new agendas such as a greener, sustainable future in shipping. I am eager to see how these fresh perspectives and the ambitious drive towards this target will shape the industry’s future here. We’re setting sail on a new adventure, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.
