The Baltic Sea Day is a celebration of the sea. The day encourages people to enjoy our unique local sea and take some concrete actions for it. During the celebrations, we will also learn more about the diverse marine nature and the culture and history of the Baltic Sea.

Different operators will hold events all across the country on Baltic Sea Day. You can learn more about the operations of the Port of Helsinki in the tent village set up on the Pakkahuone Quay in the South Harbour. Visit to hear how the merchant shipping port handles environmental issues and takes the Baltic Sea into account in its operations. Put together a harbour puzzle and take part in a social media competition!

Marine research vessel Aranda will also keep its door open at the quay during the event, offering the visitors a great chance to see the equipment used on board and learn more about the research work done by the vessel. The vessel also features a workshop where visitors can try their hand at treating wastewater. The crew from the Metsähallitus marine team will arrive to share Aranda’s quay.

The tent village around the quay area will offer activities for visitors of all ages. Visitors will get to admire seaweed samples through a microscope, see the work equipment of the Baltic Sea’s cartographers, participate in a marine-themed quiz and a waste sorting test, put together a harbour puzzle and learn about the work for the Baltic Sea done by different operators.

People interested in marine research can learn about the research methods, devices and equipment used, find out how the underwater secrets of the Baltic Sea are discovered and get to know the ongoing research projects.

The Finnish Environment Institute’s partners in organising the event are the Baltic Sea Action Group, the City of Helsinki’s Environmental Services, Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority, the Port of Helsinki, Ocean Ladies association, Naispurjehtijat – Sailing Ladies association, Finland’s Rotary association, Geological Survey of Finland, Natural Resources Institute Finland, Metsähallitus, Finnish Marine Research Infrastructure FINMARI, and Suomen Merentutkijat association.

The Baltic Sea Day launched and coordinated by the John Nurminen Foundation is held annually, on the last Thursday of August, and it features various events and campaigns. The objective of the theme day is to highlight important topics related to the sea and inspire people to take concrete actions for the Baltic Sea. The day celebrates the diversity of the sea and its immeasurable value. In addition to the celebrations, the objective is to raise awareness about the nature, culture and history of the Baltic Sea. In 2022, the Baltic Sea Day will be held on 25 August.
