Prosecutor issues arrest warrant for captain of freighter that destroyed Greek Navy minesweeper

October 29, 2020

The Piraeus prosecutor asked for the arrest of the captain of the container ship “Maersk Launceston” over charges that he caused a maritime accident through negligence and violated international rules on avoiding collision.

While exiting the port of Piraeus early on Tuesday morning, Maersk Launceston crashed into the Greek Navy minesweeper “Callisto”, cutting it in half and injuring two crew members.

The Polish captain has been being detained at the port authorities of Keratsini since the accident and will appear before the prosecutor on Tuesday. His ship is banned from sailing until repairs are completed.
