The Cyprus Marine Club marked its return after the summer break with a full house at Gazebo Mare on Tuesday, 22 September, bringing together members, distinguished guests and friends of the maritime community for an evening of professional insights, discussions and networking.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation entitled “The Mechanism of a War Risks Policy – A Case Study,” delivered by Anna and Alexandros Vourgos of Aphentrica Marine Insurance Brokers Ltd.

Against the backdrop of growing geopolitical uncertainty and increasing risks to international shipping, the speakers explored the changing landscape of marine War Risks insurance, focusing on recent developments in the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea.

Their presentation examined the role of the Joint War Committee in identifying high-risk trading areas, the mechanisms of War Risks insurance and the significant additional premiums associated with navigating these waters. Through a practical case study involving a vessel damaged in a conflict zone, they demonstrated how different insurance covers respond to a maritime casualty, including hull damage, salvage, crew liabilities and loss of hire. The case study highlighted the financial consequences of such incidents and the importance of understanding the scope and limitations of insurance coverage.

Combining approximately four decades of marine insurance experience with the perspective of a younger generation, Anna and Alexandros offered participants valuable insights into a subject that has become an increasingly important part of everyday decision-making for shipowners, managers and charterers.

The exceptional turnout at Gazebo Mare provided an enthusiastic start to the Club’s autumn programme, reaffirming its role as a meeting point for Cyprus’s maritime community.

Welcoming members and guests, the Club’sPresident, Capt. E. Koch, expressed his pleasure at seeing the venue filled with familiar faces and new members following the summer break.

The Club welcomed two new Corporate Members, Hagedorn Products & Systems and TFI Ecommpay Ltd, alongside nine new Individual Members who have joined the Club since the beginning of the summer.

The growing membership and strong participation in the Club’s gatherings reflect its continued commitment to bringing together maritime professionals in an open, welcoming environment that combines industry knowledge with valuable networking and social opportunities.

Following the presentation, members and guests enjoyed dinner and networking in the outdoor area of Gazebo Mare, continuing their discussions and reconnecting with colleagues and friends.

The Cyprus Marine Club also announced its forthcoming programme, including its next Get Together on 22 October, featuring Natasa Pilides/ eWise Ltd.  with a presentation entitled “Betting on the Future – Why Adaptability Beats Prediction in Energy and Shipping.
