FINCANTIERI joins the Global Compact and adopts the United Nations sustainability principles

As part of the process of strengthening its corporate responsibility, Fincantieri has joined the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest business sustainability initiative.

The Global Compact originates from the proposal of former UN secretary general Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1999. Since its foundation the following year, nearly 10,000 companies from over 160 countries have joined the action, creating a new organization of global cooperation. It is a voluntary initiative to join a set of ten universal principles related to human rights, labour, environment and fight against corruptionpromoting long-term sustainability values through political actions, business practices, social and civil behavior.

The CEO of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono, stated: “With this important step Fincantieri becomes the largest shipbuilder, and the first in the cruise sector, to adopt the Global Compact principles in its strategy. The most complex challenge that a large company like us can face is modelling its own culture, that is the vision with which we face the daily commitments on several fronts. We strongly believe that corporate sustainability is an essential instrument to create long-term value, especially from a multi-stakeholder point of view, such as the one that will prevail in the near future”.

The main commitments already undertaken by Fincantieri in the sustainability field and which lead to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), set out in the 2030 UN Agenda, relate to the promotion of a culture of sustainability, a responsible supply chain, involvement of employees, constant improvement of health and safety at work, support of technological innovation, maintaining customer satisfaction and loyalty, continuous dialogue and support of local communities, reducing environmental impacts and contributing to the fight against climate change.
