Minister of Business and Competitiveness Martin Lidegaard is leading a Danish business delegation to India. Green shipping is among the visit’s focus areas, with the Danish delegation visiting both APM Terminals Mumbai and the Mazagon Dock shipyard.
Danish-operated ships made more than 3,000 calls at Indian ports in 2025. This illustrates how important India is as a market for Danish shipping. Its importance will only increase as the Indian economy grows. Danish shipping is seeing growth in India across several segments, including container, dry bulk and tanker shipping.
“India is becoming an increasingly important partner for Denmark – economically, technologically and geopolitically. The country has major ambitions in areas including green shipping, renewable energy and artificial intelligence. Denmark has strong expertise that can contribute to India’s transition. I am travelling to India to learn from the pace and scale of its development, strengthen our partnerships and open doors for Danish businesses,” says Minister for Business, Competitiveness and Maritime Affairs Martin Lidegaard (Our translation, Ed.) in a press release.
Danish Shipping welcomes the visit.
“It is wise for the minister responsible for maritime affairs and the Danish Government to focus on strengthening cooperation with India. The visits to APM Terminals and Mazagon Dock highlight Danish companies’ involvement and provide an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with Indian authorities and businesses. Closer ties between Denmark and India can create new opportunities for shipping. Favourable conditions for investment, access to competitive shipyards, cooperation on greener ports and ships, and responsible ship recycling are all areas where closer cooperation can create significant value in both countries,” says Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping.

Indian shipyards are also important to Danish shipping. Ten ships are currently being built for Danish shipping companies at Indian yards. One of the major customers is dry bulk shipping company Navi Merchants, which has ordered six new, energy-efficient cargo ships being built at the Mazagon Dock shipyard in Mumbai.
“We are very pleased that the minister is visiting the shipyard and taking an interest in our activities in India. With six new ships under construction here, India is an important partner in the development of our company. We place great importance on close, long-term cooperation with the shipyard and our Indian partners,” says Rasmus Saltofte, CEO of Navi Merchants.
Green shipping is a central element of the Green Strategic Partnership established between India and Denmark in 2020. Danish companies such as APM Terminals and Navi Merchants are investing in India and contributing to the green transition.
In 2025, Danish companies exported goods and services worth DKK 21.2 billion to India.
