HHLA PLT Italy expands its terminal in the Port of Trieste – parking capacity for 300 semi-trailers added

November 4, 2026

HHLA PLT Italy has brought around 37,000 square metres of the former Servola steelworks site into operation, creating parking capacity for approximately 300 semi-trailers. The new facility gives customers greater flexibility in managing their road transport flows and supports the continued growth of Ro-Ro traffic at the Port of Trieste

The dedicated parking area is located directly adjacent to the existing terminal and is designed to accommodate semi-trailers arriving at or departing from the port. The additional space enables HHLA PLT Italy to manage road-based cargo flows more efficiently and provides greater flexibility in the handling of Ro-Ro traffic.

The new facility is part of the progressive redevelopment of the former Servola steelworks. Following the closure of the steelworks in 2020 and the subsequent demolition works, parts of the former industrial site are now being integrated into the port’s logistics activities. The 37,000-square-metre area is the first part of the wider site to be put into operational use.

The development strengthens HHLA PLT Italy’s role within the Port of Trieste and the wider European logistics network. Trieste is the northernmost port in the Mediterranean and serves as a southern gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. With its own rail connection and integration into the European intermodal network of HHLA subsidiary METRANS, the terminal connects maritime cargo flows with markets across the European hinterland.
