WinGD grows Korea engine production capacity with first HD Hyundai Marine Engine license

Swiss marine power company WinGD has signed its first-ever license agreement with engine builder HD Hyundai Marine Engine . The agreement will significantly extend WinGD’s capability to deliver its dual-fuel and diesel engine designs to bulk carrier and tanker newbuild projects in Korea and other markets using Korea-built two-stroke engines.
HD Hyundai Marine Engine was acquired by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, part of HD Hyundai Group, in 2024. Its expertise in small and mid-sized two-stroke engines complements the large engine specialism of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with which WinGD has a long-standing license agreement, and which delivers engines for large vessels including ultra-large container vessels and LNG carriers.
WinGD Vice President Product Centre, Peter Krähenbühl was on hand for the signing and said: “This new agreement expands our ability to deliver main engines for high-volume vessel segments in Korea and enables HD Hyundai Marine Engine’s customers to select WinGD engine technology. We look forward to working closely with HD Hyundai Marine Engine to strengthen the availability and competitiveness of WinGD’s mid-bore engine portfolio .”
Under the agreement, WinGD and HD Hyundai Marine Engine will share knowledge and experience to continue reducing the cost and improving vessel design integration of WinGD’s mid-bore engines, while safeguarding their high reliability and in-service performance.
HD Hyundai Marine Engine Senior Vice President, Business Management, YoungJe Woo said: “With this new license HD Hyundai Marine Engine broadens the range of high-quality engine options it can offer to shipowners. As shipping’s focus on efficiency, emissions and cost continues to advance, adding WinGD engines to our offer is an important step in meeting the evolving requirements of the market.”
WinGD’s mid-bore offer includes the X52 and X62 engine series, deployable for a range of standard bulk carrier and tanker designs as well as in other vessel segments such as pure car and truck carriers. Both bore sizes are available as X-DF dual-fuel engines – enabling the use of LNG, ammonia/LPG or methanol/ethanol – while the single-fuel X-Engine versions are designed ready for future conversion to use different fuels.
The latest mid-bore advance from WinGD is the X-S short-stroke design, also available in both 52- and 62-bore variants and for diesel or dual-fuel use. The short-stroke platform offers similar power and improved efficiency and serviceability through a smaller footprint than conventional mid-bore designs – ideal for vessel arrangements with lower deck height or draft constraints, and applicable for all vessels that use mid-bore engines.
Engines produced by HD Hyundai Marine Engine are deployed in newbuild projects across several shipyards, both in Korea and in export markets.
