How does Wi-Fi work at sea?

There’s no mobile phone mast in the middle of the ocean, so it’s fair to wonder how it’s possible to get online whilst on a cruise ship. Ships across the globe have been utilising satellite connectivity to provide Wi-Fi access for around 20 years. But in recent years, what was once a weak and patchy signal has developed into a stronger, more reliable service thanks to high speed low Earth orbit (LEO) networks.
HOW DOES WI-FI ACTUALLY WORK ON A CRUISE SHIP?
Once you’re a few miles from shore, you’re too far to connect to any land-based masts or signal towers, but that doesn’t mean your internet options stop.
Every ship at sea, from cargo vessels to cruise ships, relies on satellite technology to send and receive internet signals. For years, that meant using traditional geostationary satellites, which sit in a fixed spot around 22,000 miles above the Earth. It’s a clever system, one that was revolutionary for its time, but it requires signals to travel an enormous distance there and back, which is a big factor in why cruise ship Wi-Fi was once renowned for being slow and patchy.
In recent years, new technology has transformed the capabilities of cruise ship Wi-Fi. Ambassador ships now use Starlink, an LEO satellite network developed by SpaceX that uses a much larger constellation of satellites orbiting only a few hundred miles above Earth. This shorter distance means less time for the signal to travel, which translates into a notably faster and more stable connection. It also reduces the risk of the signal being blocked by weather or physical landmass, since there’s usually more than one Starlink satellite within range at any given time.
The increase in performance is a large step up from traditional cruise ship Wi-Fi, rather than just a minor upgrade. Starlink is now fully rolled out across Ambience, Ambition and Renaissance, with public spaces and cabins covered throughout the ships.
We have just disembarked Ambition today…
We have just disembarked Ambition today after a fabulous 13 night cruise. It’s our first time with Ambassador and it far exceeded our expectations. The staff were hard working, helpful and happy. The entertainment was great and food was a notch above P&O. It offered us what we look for in a cruise. We’re not interested in late night life, flow riders and theme parks. We just enjoy a quiet, relaxed style of cruising on a small ship. We are also very grateful to Ronald the Hotel Director for his kind invitation to join him at the captains table on our final formal night. 💜💜

IS WI-FI AT SEA AS RELIABLE AS IT IS AT HOME?
Satellite connectivity will always behave a little differently to the fixed broadband you’re used to at home; rather than connecting to a broadband hub in the next room, our ships are searching for the closest satellite above the Earth.
The ship’s location in relation to the closest satellite can impact connectivity, as well as adverse weather conditions. The speed of at-sea Wi-Fi can also be affected by the number of users online at once and the type of activity they’re using it for – for example, streaming a movie uses much more bandwidth than a simple Google search or sending a WhatsApp message. Any satellite Wi-Fi connectivity can experience brief dips in speed every now and then, so while it may not be quite as reliable as what you’re used to at home, it can more than satisfy the general needs of guests at sea.
HOW AND WHEN DO I BUY WI-FI ONBOARD?
Our Wi-Fi packages are available to purchase once on board, and it couldn’t be easier to secure your package. Simply connect to the ship’s Guest Wi-Fi, open the All Aboard portal and choose the level that suits you (Basic, Value or Premium) and the number of devices you’d like to connect (1-4) or pop over to Guest Services at reception if you’d like a hand getting set up.
For the best daily value, select a whole sailing package that covers the entirety of your cruise and purchase it within your first 24 hours on board. Whole sailing packages can be purchased later in the cruise but may be subject to a higher daily rate. You can also upgrade a Basic or Value package to a higher tier at any point throughout the cruise. If you only need to get online briefly, we offer a few other ways to get connected: choose between a 1GB, 5GB or 1 Day package.
If you’re booked into a suite, complimentary Wi-Fi for one device is included in the price of your fare. The level of Wi-Fi package varies by ship and suite type, but you may choose to upgrade to a higher tier of Wi-Fi for a fee.
Excellent value for money
Ship spotlessly clean, staff at stations at restaurants to make sure people wash their hands.
Staff are extremely helpful, polite and friendly. Very willing to help you.
Food was all very well presented, hot and tasty.
Entertainment first class, lots of activities to occupy yourself through the day should you choose to do so combined with quiet areas for reading etc.
The cruise we were on had a 70’s , 80’s and 90’s night with bands which were excellent and great fun.
Lots of people took the time to dress up for each themed evening.
First time cruising with Ambassador but it won’t be our last. Cruised with some of the more expensive companies but Ambassador was definitely up there with them. Very good value for money.
