From 78° North to the top Funken Lodge named Norway’s Leading Boutique Hotel 2026

At 78° North, surrounded by Arctic wilderness and overlooking the small town of Longyearbyen, Funken Lodge has been named Norway’s Leading Boutique Hotel 2026 at the World Travel Awards.
The recognition celebrates not only a hotel, but the people, history and distinctive spirit of Svalbard that shape every stay.
There are few hotels quite like Funken Lodge. Perched on the hillside above Longyearbyen, it is a place where Svalbard’s mining history meets contemporary Arctic hospitality – and where guests can return from a day in the wilderness to warmth, exceptional food and wine, and views across a landscape unlike anywhere else in the world.
Now, that distinctly Arctic experience has received international recognition.
Funken Lodge has been named Norway’s Leading Boutique Hotel 2026 at the World Travel Awards, one of the travel and tourism industry’s established international award programmes.
For a hotel in one of the world’s northernmost settlements, the award carries particular significance.
“Creating warmth and elegance in the middle of the raw Arctic takes creativity, dedication and an incredible team. Receiving this award is a proud milestone for Funken Lodge, and it means a great deal to represent Longyearbyen and Svalbard on an international stage. We are incredibly grateful to every guest who voted for us and helped make this recognition possible,” says Therese Fredriksson, Hotel Director at Funken Lodge.
A hotel with Svalbard in its walls
Funken Lodge’s story is closely intertwined with the history of Longyearbyen itself.
Originally built as accommodation for the functionaries of the mining company Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani, the building has long been part of Svalbard’s social and cultural history. Today, that heritage remains an important part of its identity, transformed into an intimate boutique hotel where historic character meets modern Nordic design and comfort.
The experience extends far beyond the rooms. At Funktionærmessen Restaurant, Arctic ingredients and local stories meet an international culinary perspective, with everything from an à la carte menu to a seven-course dinner experience. Funken Bar provides a warm gathering place after days spent exploring the surrounding wilderness, while the hotel’s distinctive wine and Champagne cellars offer an unexpected discovery at 78° North.
Beyond the table, Funken Lodge invites guests to slow down in a different way. A warming sauna and yoga sessions offer a restorative counterpoint to days spent exploring Svalbard’s Arctic wilderness. It’s a quieter kind of luxury – and the perfect way to reset at 78° North.
But at the heart of Funken Lodge are the people.
In a destination defined by extremes – polar night and midnight sun, mountains, glaciers and vast Arctic landscapes – hospitality becomes something more than service. It is about creating warmth, belonging and memorable encounters at the edge of the world.
The award marks a new chapter in Funken Lodge’s long history and reinforces its position as a destination for travellers seeking more than simply a place to stay.
“When I look back at how far we have come at Funken Lodge, receiving this award makes me incredibly proud. It represents years of hard work, small improvements every day, challenges we have overcome together and, above all, a team that genuinely cares about our guests and about each other,” says Luiz Cauduro, Hotel Operations Manager at Funken Lodge.
Here, luxury is not about excess. It is about contrasts: Arctic wilderness outside and warmth inside. History alongside contemporary comfort. A glass of Champagne after a day in the mountains. And personal hospitality in a place few people will ever forget.
