Wärtsilä expands its role in major Brazilian power plant projects to full engineering and construction delivery

Technology group Wärtsilä has broadened its role in seven power plant projects under two contracts for Brazilian energy company Origem Energia, expanding previously announced engine supply to also include process engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities above ground level. The equipment supply contractswere booked in Q1 and Q2 2026, while the process EPC order was booked by Wärtsilä in Q3 2026.
The power plant projects, awarded in Brazil’s 2026 Reserve Capacity Auction, represent 371 MW of flexible capacity needed to provide balancing power and support the reliability of the Brazilian grid as the share of renewable energy increases.
“These projects represent an important step in Origem Energia’s strategy to develop an integrated energy platform, connecting our natural gas resources to flexible power generation. By adding this capacity to Brazil’s power system, we will contribute to greater reliability and resilience while advancing the development of a strategic energy hub in Alagoas. The expanded scope with Wärtsilä supports the execution of this investment and the delivery of these projects according to the required schedule and technical standards,” says Levi Souto, Director of Power Plant Construction at Origem Energia
The seven power plant projects – Pilar Nova, Pilar and Manguaba I–V – are located in Northeastern Brazil and will operate using Origem Energia’s own onshore natural gas resources. Altogether the plants will use 36 Wärtsilä 34SG balancing engines.
“Our project execution capabilities are clearly reflected with this conversion of the original equipment supply contracts into the broader EPC scope,” comments Gastón Giani, Energy Business Director for Region South, Americas at Wärtsilä Energy. “All seven projects align with our strengths in delivering flexible and reliable capacity, helping to maintain security of supply as the share of renewable energy increases. The amendments reflect the strong partnership between the companies and Origem Energia’s confidence in Wärtsilä’s ability to deliver the complete power plant solution.”
The equipment delivery and construction timetables are expected to align with the commissioning schedules for the respective power plants: The Pilar Nova and Pilar plants are scheduled to commence commercial operation in October 2028, and the Manguaba I–V plants in August 2029.
