Wärtsilä closes the transaction of the joint venture for its global Energy Storage business with RCT Solutions

Technology group Wärtsilä has closed the transaction of the joint venture for its Energy Storage business, following the agreement with German engineering company RCT Solutions GmbH announced on 15 June 2026. Under the arrangement, Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions each hold a 50% ownership stake in the joint venture, called Valo.
The joint venture combines Wärtsilä’s global energy storage capabilities with RCT Solutions’ engineering expertise and is designed to provide a strong platform for long-term growth in the rapidly evolving energy storage market.
Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage business employs approximately 450 people globally, and in 2025, it generated net sales of EUR 694 million. The transaction represents less than 5% of Wärtsilä’s total net assets.
Energy Storage ceased to be a separate reporting segment in Wärtsilä in the second quarter of 2026. Up to the completion of the transaction, the Energy Storage business is reported in discontinued operations. During the third quarter of 2026, Wärtsilä recognised a write-down of capitalised R&D related to the Energy Storage business before the establishment of the joint venture, rather than within the joint venture as previously expected. It is expected that the new joint venture will generate operating loss in 2026 and positive results towards the end of 2027.
With the transaction now completed, the joint venture will focus on executing its growth strategy and serving customers globally as an independent company jointly owned by Wärtsilä and RCT Solutions GmbH.
