New process aims to streamline ship design and classification approval

KR signed a Memorandum of Understanding  with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries  at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok on September 15 for the joint development of a 3D Model-Based Approval (3DMBA) process for ship structural design.

The project aims to establish a new approval framework that will enable 3D models used by shipyards for vessel design to be directly used for classification approval.

While ship design is rapidly transitioning toward a 3D model-based environment, 2D drawings are still required for classification approval. As a result, shipyards must convert information already contained in their 3D design models into separate 2D drawings for class review.

Under the MOU, KR and HD HHI will work to eliminate this duplication by developing a process that enables 3D design models to be used directly for classification review and approval.

HD HHI will provide 3D ship design models and related data and conduct pilot applications on actual vessel projects to verify the practical applicability of the new process. KR will define the scope, review requirements and criteria for 3D model-based approval and develop a framework for assessing compliance with classification rules directly from the 3D model. The results of the pilot applications will also be incorporated into the process to further enhance its effectiveness and reliability.

The two organizations expect the new approach to reduce the time and workload involved in preparing separate 2D drawings while also shortening the class approval process. The project will also strengthen KR’s capabilities in 3D model-based review and support the transition toward a next-generation digital classification approval framework.

Following the project, KR and HD HHI plan to expand the 3D model-based design and approval framework to a wider range of vessel types and projects, with the aim of supporting its broader application across the shipbuilding industry.
