This summer, the Klaveness Japan team were joined by Ryo Miura, Japanese representative of Baumarine by Klaveness pool member Taiship, for a visit to M/V Penta while the vessel was discharging grain in Mizushima, Japan. Beyond providing a close-up view of operations, the visit gave our team the opportunity to reflect on how strong collaboration can unlock greater trading efficiency in practice.

Recently redelivered from a previous charter and approaching its 15-year special survey, Penta impressed the team with its condition and operational readiness. Haruki Chua, General Manager of Klaveness Japan, commented that while some charterers may become more selective as vessels age, Penta demonstrated how the right vessel can continue to create clear value when matched with the right trade. “With a bit of craftsmanship, we were able to identify a trade where Penta could load almost as much as a Kamsarmax in the draft restricted ports of Japan.”

Haruki also noted that the voyage highlighted how trading efficiency often extends well beyond the performance of a single vessel. Originally planned as a two-port discharge across opposite ends of Japan, the voyage took an unexpected turn when a stockout at a neighboring silo in Mizushima created an opportunity for different receivers to swap cargoes between vessels. The adjustment enabled all receivers to receive their cargo on time, while improving vessel positioning for the next trades.

For Penta, the change meant saving two and a half days of ballast towards her dry dock. For the other vessel involved, it reduced unnecessary sailing time and left it better positioned for its next North Pacific employment. Together, the result was improved utilization and a more efficient outcome for all parties.

For Junji Aratani, Chartering Manager in Japan, the experience reinforced the bigger picture on the value that can be created through closer collaboration: “While this efficiency gain was triggered by an unexpected cargo shortage, it highlighted what is possible when owners and charterers work together at a deeper level. Lower average freight costs, reduced emissions, and a more efficient fleet are just the tip of the iceberg.”
