Eni and PETRONAS explore innovative biofuel solutions

Signed a Feasibility Agreement to evaluate high-performance, commercially scalable bio-gasoline for potential future applications
During the 2026 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, Eni and PETRONAS have signed a Feasibility Agreement (FA) to evaluate the development of innovative high-performance bio-gasoline starting from the established Ecofining™ technology process, through which Eni has been producing HVO biofuels from renewable raw materials since 2014. The aim of the agreement is to assess the technical, market, and sustainability profiles, as well as the performance levels of new bio-gasolines from renewable raw materials, that can be used in motorsport competitions and subsequently applied to the development of commercial products.
This new agreement strengthens the collaboration between the two companies in the field of biofuels, in which both companies already have many years of technological and industrial experience, supporting the progressive decarbonization of the transport sector.
The study will enable both companies to combine their distinctive expertise. On one side, Eni will contribute its consolidated experience in sustainable energy solutions and in the production, at Enilive biorefineries, of commercially available biofuels from renewable feedstocks – including HVO diesel and SAF-biojet – as well as the development of innovative bio-gasoline. Meanwhile, PETRONAS will contribute its proven expertise in fuel technology, from fossil-based fuels to high-performance sustainable fuels for combustion engines, together with its experience in sustainable energy solutions and advanced product development.
Together with PETRONAS, Eni recently established Searah, a 50:50 independent joint venture combining key operations in Indonesia and Malaysia, including a portfolio of 19 gas production and development assets in the two countries. Together with Enilive and Euglena, PETRONAS has established Pengerang Biorefinery Sdn. Bhd., a joint venture developing a biorefinery in Pengerang, Johor, Malaysia. By the second half of 2028, the facility is expected to have the capacity to process up to 650,000 tonnes of renewable feedstocks per year, producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), HVO diesel and bio-naphtha. Enilive is a global leader in the production of HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) diesel, currently available at more than 1,700 service stations across Europe.
