Thomas Egebo steps down as CEO of Energinet

President and CEO, Thomas Egebo - Energinet

Energinet’s Board of Directors and Energinet CEO Thomas Egebo have agreed to end their cooperation. Deputy CEO and COO Søren Dupont Kristensen has been appointed acting CEO.

Energinet is facing several major tasks. The expansion of the transmission grid must be accelerated significantly, limited grid capacity must be managed in a situation of very high demand, and new technological and market-based solutions must be developed to make better use of the scarce capacity.

This places new and greater demands on Energinet’s leadership and ability to execute. Against this background, the Board assesses that a different profile is needed to lead Energinet into its next phase.

“A new CEO must develop Energinet into a decisive and open company that ensures security of supply, expands infrastructure faster and works more closely with customers and distribution companies. Energinet must take responsibility for developing new solutions, applying new technology and having the courage to challenge the way things have been done so far. Priorities must be clear and execution must be swift, for the benefit of customers and society,” says Board Chair Tommy Ahlers.

Energinet must expand the critical infrastructure that is essential to the green transition, a more independent energy supply and Danish competitiveness at a faster pace, while continuing to maintain a high level of security of supply. This requires sharper priorities and visible results.

The need for a new direction does not change the fact that Thomas Egebo has made a significant and important contribution during his eight years as CEO.

“For many years, Thomas has made a major contribution to Energinet and to the development of the Danish energy system. He has been a strong advocate for the green transition and has shown a particular dedication to digitalisation and to maintaining a high professional standard in the company. At the same time, Thomas has played an active role for Denmark in Nordic and European cooperation on energy and the green transition. The Board and I would like to thank him for that,” says Tommy Ahlers.

Thomas Egebo says:
“I am proud of my time at Energinet and of what we have achieved together. The energy system has undergone enormous changes during my time as CEO, and Energinet’s task has only grown larger and more important. I have great respect for the many highly skilled employees at Energinet and wish them and the company all the best in the major work that lies ahead.”

The Board has initiated a recruitment process to find a new CEO. The process will be carried out with the assistance of an external recruitment firm. Søren Dupont Kristensen has been appointed acting CEO until a new CEO takes up the position.

“It is crucial to me that Energinet does not lose momentum in the coming period. Søren has held various executive roles at Energinet since 2011 and has been a member of the Executive Board since 2023. He therefore knows the company and the task in depth, and the Board is confident that, together with the rest of the management team, he can ensure the necessary progress during the transition period,” says Tommy Ahlers.
