The Swedish Club reports strong financial performance amid challenging market conditions

The Swedish Club has reported a strong and disciplined financial performance for the first half of 2026, underpinned by improved underwriting profitability, continued premium growth and a stable contribution from the investment portfolio.
The Club recorded an underwriting result of USD 3.6 million, up from USD 2.6 million in the first half of 2025. The combined ratio improved to 96%, compared with 97% in the corresponding period last year, demonstrating continued sound technical performance in an operating environment shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, regulatory change and evolving maritime risks.
The investment portfolio continued to provide a stable contribution, generating a year-to-date return of USD 11.1 million, corresponding to a 2% return, of which USD 8.6 million was attributable to equities. Overall, result before appropriations and tax amounted to USD 14.1 million.
Free reserves stood at USD 282 million as of 30 June 2026, reinforcing the Club’s strong financial position and providing a solid foundation to support members and absorb volatility in an increasingly uncertain operating environment.
Thomas Nordberg, CEO of The Swedish Club, said: “Our priority is to ensure The Swedish Club remains financially strong so that we can deliver lasting value to our members over the long term. These results reflect our continued focus on disciplined underwriting, prudent financial management and maintaining the financial strength and resilience our members rely on. In today’s increasingly complex and uncertain operating environment, that resilience is more important than ever and remains an enduring strength of our mutual model.”
During the period, The Swedish Club continued to invest in initiatives that strengthen support for members across insurance, loss prevention, crew wellbeing and cyber resilience. Recent developments included the launch of a refreshed brand identity, continued expansion of the Club’s wellbeing resources through the Check Your Pulse initiative, and new cyber resilience support through its strategic collaboration with DNV Cyber and CyberOwl.
The Club also continued to develop its digital offering, improving access to loss prevention guidance and member resources as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting safer and more sustainable shipping.
Thomas Nordberg added: “Financial strength is not an objective in itself. It enables us to continue investing in the people, expertise and services that help our members manage risk and operate safely. That long-term perspective remains central to everything we do as a mutual insurer.”
