GTT’s membrane technology selected for the world’s largest ethane storage tank

GTT has received an order from its partner China Chengda Engineering , for the design of an ethane full-containment membrane tank in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. The tank will be built for Ningbo Union King New Material Limited, a subsidiary of Union King Holding Ltd, following the strategic cooperation agreement signed with GTT in December 2025 during the French presidential state visit to China.
With a capacity of 200,000 m³, the tank will be the world’s largest dedicated to ethane storage. It will support Union King Holding Ltd’s expanding petrochemical operations by strengthening security of supply and operational continuity. In addition to ethane, the tank will also be capable of storing other liquefied gases, including propane, butane and LPG.
Drawing on GTT’s decades of expertise in membrane containment systems, the GST® technology is designed to address the key challenges of onshore liquefied gas storage. Compared with conventional solutions, it improves thermal efficiency, optimises material usage, and enables the construction of very large capacity tanks. The project is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2028.
Adnan Ezzarhouni, General Manager of GTT China, declared: “We are proud to contribute to this landmark project alongside Union King Holding Ltd and China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. The selection of GST® technology for what will become the world’s largest ethane storage tank confirms the confidence placed in our membrane technology in addressing the technical challenges associated with the development of increasingly ambitious and complex storage infrastructure.”
Mr. Zeng Zhizhong, Vice President of China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd, declared: “We are honoured to contribute to the delivery of this landmark project for Union King Holding Ltd. Combining Chengda’s EPC expertise with GTT’s proven membrane technology, we are committed to delivering a world-class facility that will support Union King Holding Ltd’s long-term development ambitions.”
Mr. Chang Wenming, the authorised representative of Union King Holding Ltd, declared: “We are very pleased to formalise the initial agreement reached in December 2025 with this contract signed through Union King Holding Ltd. By adopting GTT’s membrane technology, we will benefit from optimised, very large-capacity storage with multi-gas flexibility, which will significantly strengthen our ability to meet evolving supply challenges.”
