HD Hyundai Samho delivered the world’s first ship applied with aluminum cables.

HD Hyundai Samho announced on June 9 that it recently held the ‘World’s First Successful Application of Aluminum Cables Report Meeting’ at the company yard. Executives and employees, including Shim Hak-mu, senior executive vice president and head of the company’s design division, as well as officials from HMM, the Korean Register, and Kukdong Cable, attended the report meeting.

This ship, named ‘HMM JADE’, is the first case where aluminum cables, a new technology developed by Kukdong Cable, were applied. By applying aluminum cables in a situation where the price of copper used for existing cables is skyrocketing globally, the company secured a cost reduction of around 30% as well as a ship weight reduction effect of 11 tons at the same time.

This project was carried out in stages over about 3 years, starting with acquiring the concept approval from the Korean Register in 2023, followed by consultations with equipment companies, application proposals to the shipowner HMM, on-site installation inspections, worker briefing sessions, and sea trials.

Shim Hak-mu said, “This achievement is a meaningful case of yielding results by boldly applying new technology to an actual ship,” and, “We will further strengthen the company’s competitiveness through the continuous development and application of new technologies.”

Meanwhile, the ‘HMM JADE’, which recently completed its delivery signature, immediately set sail for its first port of call.
