Daehan Shipbuilding is accelerating its efforts to target the eco-friendly ship market by successively promoting joint development projects to secure energy reduction technologies.

Daehan Shipbuilding signed a joint development project (JDP) for a ‘diesel generator battery assist system utilizing a shaft generator motor’ with the Norwegian classification society (DNV) and Chinese eco-friendly solution company SETH on June 3. This technology is a type of energy storage system (ESS) that stores surplus power generated during ship operation in a battery and uses it when power demand surges. Even in situations with high power loads, the battery supplies supplementary power, which is expected to suppress unnecessary operation of the generator and simultaneously reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Subsequently, on June 4, the company signed a JDP for ‘container ship wind shield technology development’ with Mokpo National University and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). A wind shield is a device that minimizes air resistance generated during operation by installing a curved structure on the front part of a ship. Due to the nature of ships that stack containers high on the deck, they are inevitably greatly affected by wind, but applying this technology can optimize air flow to improve propulsion efficiency and save fuel costs.

This project added the significance of realizing the value of mutual growth through industry-academia cooperation in that it is conducted together with Mokpo National University, a regional flagship national university. Daehan Shipbuilding plans to continuously expand cooperation with external institutions to foster regional talent and enhance the fundamental competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry.

A representative from Daehan Shipbuilding emphasized, “We are preemptively responding to international environmental regulations by expanding our green ship lineup,” and added, “We will continue to provide differentiated value to our client companies by applying innovative eco-friendly technologies to ships in the future.”
