Daehan Shipbuilding announced on June 4 that it had received Approval in Principle  for its 88K-class Very Large Gas Carrier from Lloyd’s Register (LR) of the United Kingdom and Korean Register , respectively, at the 2026 Posidonia, the world’s largest maritime trade fair.

The certified 88K-class VLGC is regarded as a next-generation model that maximizes cargo capacity while optimizing operational efficiency. Building on this achievement, Daehan Shipbuilding has laid the groundwork to flexibly respond to market changes by expanding its portfolio — previously centered on mid-to-large tankers and container vessels — to include gas carriers.

Technological cooperation aimed at securing an early position in the eco-friendly ship market has also taken concrete shape. Daehan Shipbuilding signed a Joint Development Project (JDP) agreement with British eco-technology company Armada and Lloyd’s Register to examine the deployment of a Passive Air Lubrication System (PALS), advancing the company’s technological capabilities.

The system is an energy-saving technology that reduces frictional resistance against seawater by injecting air bubbles beneath the hull. Armada’s passive method, in particular, can operate without a separate compressor, resulting in higher fuel efficiency than conventional systems and a dramatic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“This design certification and eco-technology cooperation will serve as an important turning point in diversifying our technology portfolio in line with market trends,” said Lee Sang-cheol, Head of the Technology Division at Daehan Shipbuilding, adding, “We will continue to collaborate with global partners to lead the future eco-friendly ship market.”
