Columbia Group has named Martina Claire Caditan as its Cadet of the Year, spotlighting the success of its cadet development programme as the maritime industry works to address growing crew shortages and retention challenges.

The Cadet of the Year award was presented to Third Officer Ms Caditan during a formal ceremony at the CSM Manila Office earlier this year, whose journey exemplified dedication, resilience, and professional growth, Columbia Group said.

Ms Caditan joined Columbia’s Cadet programme in 2020 under the IMEC Cadet Sponsorship Scheme while studying at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP) based in the Philippines. Over four years, she completed academic training, leadership development and onboard experience, describing the journey as one of the most transformative chapters of her life.

“Life at sea taught me resilience, adaptability, teamwork and professionalism,” she said. “From being a beginner who once struggled to adjust, I gradually grew into a more confident and responsible individual.” She credited Columbia’s mentors, officers and crewmates with helping her through challenges including self-doubt, homesickness and adjusting to life onboard.

“What stood out most was how approachable and supportive the mentors were,” she said. “They reminded me that every cadet starts as a beginner and that mistakes are part of learning.” As a female cadet in a male-dominated industry, she said she worked hard to build strong relationships onboard while proving that gender is no barrier to professionalism, safety and teamwork.

In response to mounting concerns over crew shortages, retention challenges and evolving IMO training requirements, Columbia Group announced its enhanced Training Cadet Programme earlier this month. Through Maritime HR, Columbia Group’s HR and learning and development division, the company has introduced a more robust governance structure for its cadet operations, designed to provide greater oversight, welfare support and career progression for cadets from recruitment through to officer level.

Looking ahead, Ms Caditan hopes to continue progressing in the industry, with the long-term ambition of becoming a captain.
