HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that executives from both companies met at the Ottawa office of Davie Shipbuilding in Canada on May 26 to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation across the shipbuilding and naval vessel businesses. During this meeting, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries emphasized its vessel technology as the world’s leading shipbuilder and the excellent performance of K-submarines, exchanging win-win plans for the development of the Canadian shipbuilding industry.

The cooperative partner, Davie Shipbuilding, is the largest shipyard in Canada established in the early 19th century and possesses various construction records including icebreakers and offshore plants. In particular, as it has Helsinki Shipyard in Finland as a subsidiary, the cooperation between the two companies is expected to develop into a long-term strategic partnership encompassing the Arctic market in the future.

Executives of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also attended the welcoming ceremony for the arrival of the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho submarine held at a local naval base to directly promote the combat capabilities of K-submarines. Joo Won-ho, President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, expressed his determination by stating that the company is expanding its business areas by sharing capabilities with Canada’s representative shipyards and that he will do his best to ensure the K-defense One Team can win the project.

Earlier in May, executives from Canada’s Irving Shipbuilding visited the Ulsan headquarters to directly verify the naval vessel construction capabilities. Irving Shipbuilding is considered one of the three major shipyards playing a core role in building Canadian Navy vessels.

In January, HD Hyundai prepared a plan to import Canadian crude oil worth trillions of won through its energy affiliate, HD Hyundai Oilbank. Along with this, the company is passing on its shipbuilding know-how to local shipyards and providing comprehensive consulting for submarine operation and maintenance.
