Cyclus Marine, a newly established lifecycle services company within Wilhelmsen Ship Management, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Lloyd’s Register  to strengthen and scale responsible ship recycling globally.

The agreement follows the launch of Cyclus Marine last week and marks an important next step in building a more structured, transparent, and credible approach to ship recycling at a time when demand is expected to increase significantly in the years ahead.

As ageing fleets, regulatory pressures, and sustainability requirements converge, ship recycling is set to play a critical role in the maritime lifecycle. However, the industry continues to face challenges related to environmental performance, worker safety, and consistency in standards. Through this collaboration, Cyclus Marine and LR aim to help bridge that gap.

Under the MOU, Cyclus Marine and LR will collaborate across four key areas:

• Development of a framework for assessing ship recycling facilities, supporting consistent and transparent evaluation against recognised standards.
• Audits of ship recycling facilities, helping owners make informed decisions when selecting recycling yards.
• Training and development of the workforce, strengthening competence, safety, and operational practices.
• Promotion of responsible ship recycling, contributing to higher industry standards and increased confidence in compliant recycling solutions.

Together, these elements are intended to support vessel owners in managing end‑of‑life decisions responsibly, while contributing to safer working conditions and improved environmental outcomes at recycling facilities.

Cyclus Marine brings together decades of experience across newbuilding supervision, dry‑docking, retrofitting, conversions, and decommissioning and recycling – supporting vessels throughout their entire lifecycle. The collaboration with LR supports Cyclus Marine’s ambition to be a long‑term partner for asset owners, extending technical and project management expertise all the way to a vessel’s final phase.
