LG Energy Solution has begun its first shipment of energy storage system  batteries from Poland, stepping up its drive into the European market.

LG LGES announced on April 24 that it had shipped the first batch of batteries to be supplied for the Żarnowiec ESS project in Poland, jointly pursued with PGE, Poland’s state-owned power company, as of April 23 (local time).

LG LGES was previously selected in March of last year as a business partner for the PGE-led project.

Starting this year, the company plans to supply lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for ESS in full production from its Wrocław factory in Poland.

The project is one of Europe’s largest power storage system construction initiatives, with a total output capacity of 262 MW (megawatts) and a storage capacity of 981 MWh (megawatt-hours).

LG LGES began supplying DC LINK systems equipped with LFP batteries from mid-month, and some units have already arrived on-site with installation underway.

The equipment to be installed consists of a total of 204 container-type units, each weighing approximately 45 tons. Installation is proceeding at an average pace of 4 units per day.

This shipment is viewed as more than a simple supply arrangement. It is seen as an opportunity for LG LGES to demonstrate its capability to execute large-scale projects within the European ESS market.

Lee Sang-hoon, head of the LG LGES Poland Wrocław subsidiary, said, “This project is a locally grounded value chain initiative, covering the entire process in Poland from electrodes, cells, and modules to ESS containers,” adding, “Drawing on the technology and experience we have gained, it will serve as a foundation for expanding energy transition projects across Europe in the future.”
