Hanwha Group announced that it will strengthen comprehensive business cooperation with the Government of Alberta, Canada, across key industries, including energy, defense, and shipbuilding.

On April 21 , an MOU signing ceremony was held at the Alberta Legislature Building in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to identify mutually beneficial investment opportunities and establish a long-term cooperative relationship between Hanwha and Alberta. Attendees at the ceremony included Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta; Joseph Schow, Alberta’s Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade; Lim Ki-mo, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Canada; Lee Jae-gyu, Chief Executive Officer of Hanwha Energy; and other key executives of Hanwha Group.

Hanwha Group and the Government of Alberta agreed to explore mid- to long-term investment and the development of an industrial ecosystem with Alberta as a hub, beyond cooperation on individual projects. Major Hanwha Group affiliates—including Hanwha Energy, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Power—will participate as strategic partners to strengthen cooperation across various areas, such as building supply chains in oil, LNG, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage (CCS), defense, and shipbuilding.

The core of the MOU is to support the transition to low-carbon energy and to reinforce growth of related industries and supply chain stability. In the short term, the parties plan to secure a foundation for cooperation between the two countries by expanding trade in resources such as natural gas, and in the mid to long term, to expand the scope of cooperation to hydrogen- and ammonia-based clean energy projects and carbon management infrastructure.

Hanwha Group also plans to support the securing of independent industrial capabilities targeted by Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS), the strengthening of long-term maintenance, repair, and operation capabilities, and the creation of a region-based defense industrial ecosystem.

Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta, who attended the MOU signing ceremony, emphasized, “Alberta is a hub for global business and is building strong global partnerships that create jobs and grow our economy,” adding, “This agreement with Hanwha Group demonstrates Alberta’s competitiveness as a destination for international investment while also proving that global companies place high value on cooperation with Alberta.”

At the ceremony, Lee Jae-gyu, Chief Executive Officer of Hanwha Energy, stated, “This MOU has provided an opportunity to elevate our cooperative relationship with Alberta, Canada to the next level,” and added, “We will bring together Hanwha Group’s capabilities to produce tangible outcomes of cooperation across various fields.”
