The international NGO, Byzantine National Lifeboat Institution (BNLI Stichting), has announced it is proudly flying the historic Byzantine Naval ensign on board its search and rescue ship.

For the first time since the fall of Constantinople in May 1453—a span of 573 years—the Byzantine Navy flag has been raised on an active vessel. The distinctive flag, featuring a white background with a blue cross and four ‘B’s in the corners of the cross, dates back to the era of Saint Constantine the Great. It was first used as an imperial standard starting in 323 AD, symbolising Constantine’s vision of a cross before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, a moment that marked the beginning of his conversion to Christianity.

Led by Chairman Mr. Nicolaos Khovrin Komnenos, BNLI Stichting is currently collaborating with local partners in Cyprus to relocate its search and rescue fleet to the island. This strategic relocation is part of a broader initiative to establish local lifeboat stations, launch extensive marine protection programmes, and introduce whale watching operations.

The organisation notes that its mission mirrors the vision of Saint Constantine the Great: that the Middle East, including Cyprus, is bound to prosper under the guidance of faithful, active members of civil society.
