SeaARCTOS, a provider of real-time emissions monitoring solutions for the global shipping industry, has announced that its ARCTOS-1™ system has received Type Approval from Lloyd’s Register  for Sulphur Dioxide  emissions reporting.

Supported by a worldwide patent and MARPOL-approved technology, the system reads SO₂, CO₂, and geolocation data in real time and transmits independently to a secure cloud platform. The Type Approval confirms the accuracy, reliability, and robustness of the technology, which is the only system capable of continuous, direct, and independent SO₂ monitoring.

ARCTOS-1™ is a compact, stack-mounted sensor that captures emissions data directly from the exhaust and transmits it securely to the cloud, independent of the vessel’s communications systems. Powered by waste heat, the carbon-neutral unit requires no welding, cutting, or external power and can be installed in under an hour. Automated operation and built-in tamper alerts notify both operators and authorities of any interference.

The technology, which has been extensively validated through more than 20,000 hours of real-world testing across commercial fleets, reduces administrative burden and eliminates off-hire time for emissions testing. By submitting its data directly to port and flag state authorities, the system helps minimise delays, improve transparency, and provide concrete evidence of compliance to cargo owners, financiers, and shareholders.

Beyond regulatory compliance, sulphur emissions also represent a significant human health risk. SO₂ can harm seafarers, port workers, passengers, and nearby communities, worsening existing conditions like asthma, and causing respiratory problems with long-term exposure linked to lung cancer, and potentially increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, according to the World Health Organization.
