The Goulandris Natural History Museum in Kifissia recently provided a distinguished setting for a deep dive into the state of the maritime industry at the 2nd CSN Greece Shipping Debate. Titled “Shipping through times of turbulence and innovation,” the event on 26 February 2026 gathered a powerhouse of Greek and Cyprus shipping leaders to tackle the shifting sands of global trade, the reality of the green transition, and the legal frontiers of digital transformation.

The debate was placed under the auspices of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and supported by the Propeller Club, AMMITEC, HEMEXPO, HELMEPA, WIMA, WISTA Hellas, ASAP Athens, Business Events Calendar and MASO Strategic.

Keynote: Rethinking Shipping Strategy

The day’s proceedings were set in motion by a compelling keynote address from Vassilios Demetriades, MINTRA Global Ambassador and former Shipping Deputy Minister of Cyprus. In his speech, “Rethinking Shipping: From proactive to reactive strategy,” Demetriades challenged the industry to move beyond its traditional reactive stance.

He argued that in an era of “permacrisis,” shipping companies can no longer simply respond to regulations or geopolitical shocks as they occur. Instead, he called for a structural shift toward a proactive strategic framework, where innovation and regulatory compliance are integrated into the core business model rather than treated as external burdens. His address served as a roadmap for the sessions that followed, urging the audience to lead the change rather than be led by it.

Shipping Markets in Transition: Geopolitics, Trade Flows and Supply Chain Realignment

The first, moderated by Vasilios Mouyis of Doric Shipbrokers, focused on the “new normal” of geopolitical disruption. While the continued impact of the Red Sea and Black Sea tensions were central themes, the discussion took a sobering turn regarding the future of the Middle East.

Vassilios Demetriades (MINTRA/HEMEXPO) and Stefanos Fragos (Allied Shipbroking) discussed the operational fallout of such volatility, noting that the independent shipowner remains the vital guarantor of global supply, even as trade fragmentises. Theophanis Theophanous (BSM Hellas) addressed the immense pressure these high-stakes geopolitical shifts place on technical management and, crucially, the safety of crews operating in increasingly hostile waters.

Navigating the Green Shift: Technology, Innovation and the Path to Shipping Decarbonisation

The second panel shifted to the industry’s technical and regulatory hurdles. With the IMO’s 2050 Net-Zero targets looming, the discussion moved beyond theory into the practicalities of compliance in an era of high capital risk.

Industry veterans Panos Zachariadis (Atlantic Bulk Carriers) and George Souravlas (Load Line Marine S.A.) offered a pragmatic view, noting that the industry requires a level playing field and greater clarity on future fuels. They stressed that while EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime are now operational realities, energy-saving technologies remain the most effective bridge to the 2050 goals.

The digital and legal dimensions were explored by Dr. Matthew Maheras (Metrostar Management/AMMITEC) and George Koufos (ABS), who discussed how AI and data-driven insights are now essential for emissions reporting. Christiana Aristidou (The Hybrid LawTech Firm) provided a crucial perspective on the evolving legal landscape, reminding the audience that the “Green Shift” is as much about regulatory governance and digital law as it is about hardware.
